AEO vs SEO
AEO vs SEO: same goal, different game.
For twenty years, the job was easy to name: rank on Google. Get the blue link. Win the click.
But more and more, the answer never reaches a results page. It gets spoken back inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok — no ten blue links, no scroll, just one answer. Hundreds of millions of people now discover brands through AI answer engines every week. Those engines don’t read your site the way Google does, and they don’t pick winners the same way either.
That’s the gap AEO closes.
SEO gets you found in search. AEO gets you cited in the answer.
Free, ~60 seconds, no signup. A 0–100 score and an A–F grade across 5 categories. Same site, same score.
Check your AEO readinessThe one-line difference
The difference is where visibility happens.
SEO optimizes for a search engine that hands back a list of links and lets the person choose.
AEO optimizes for an answer engine that reads the web, decides on its own, and hands the person a single answer — usually with a few sources attached.
Both want you visible. In SEO, you compete for a rank. In AEO, you compete to be the source the model trusts enough to repeat.
The brands AI remembers are the ones that prepared.
Different engines, different rules
These aren’t two flavors of the same thing.
The machines underneath work differently, so the rules change.
A search engine indexes. An answer engine reasons.
Google crawls pages, ranks them, and shows you links. An answer engine pulls from across the web, synthesizes, and writes a reply in its own words. You’re no longer trying to be clickable. You’re trying to be quotable.
There’s no page one to win.
SEO has a leaderboard you can see — position 1 through 10. In an answer engine, there’s no visible ranking. Either the model mentions you, cites you, recommends you, or it doesn’t — and it can do all of that without sending a single click your way.
The engines are plural now.
SEO largely meant one engine: Google. AEO spans nine that matter today — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, and Z.ai. Each reads the web a little differently. Showing up in one doesn’t mean you show up in the rest.
Mentions aren’t citations.
A model can name your brand without trusting your site as a source — and it can cite a competitor while barely mentioning you. SEO never had this split. AEO lives in it. That gap is the whole reason measuring AI visibility takes its own tooling.
What an answer engine needs
What an answer engine actually needs from your site.
Here’s the plain version of what changes on the page itself.
A search engine is forgiving. It will crawl messy markup, guess at your meaning, and index you anyway. An answer engine is pickier, because it has to understand you well enough to repeat you confidently to a stranger. That comes down to a handful of signals:
- AI crawlability
- Can AI crawlers actually reach and read your pages? For a restaurant: can AI read your menu, hours, and location at all?
- Entity understanding
- Does the engine know who you are, what you do, and where, without guessing?
- Structured data
- Is your key information labeled in a way machines read cleanly?
- Answer readiness
- Is your content written so a model can lift a clean, correct answer straight from it?
- Citation confidence
- When a model uses you, does it trust you enough to name you as the source?

The honest framing
Does SEO still matter? Yes.
This isn’t “SEO is dead.” Good SEO and good AEO overlap — clean, crawlable, well-structured content helps both, and answer engines often pull from the same open web that search ranks.
AEO is the layer SEO didn’t cover.
Schema, crawl health, and clear writing were always good practice. AEO makes them load-bearing, adds signals SEO never measured (like citation confidence), and tracks a surface SEO tools were never built to see — what nine different models say about you, right now. You don’t replace SEO. You extend it to where the answers actually happen.
