Why AEO
AI models don’t rank pages — they cite sources.
Ask an assistant for the best tool in your category and you do not get ten links. You get one answer, assembled from a handful of sources the model decided to trust. Your ranking did not decide that. Your retrievability did.
The shift
Ten blue links became one answer.
For twenty-five years the results page was a menu. You asked a question, the engine returned a ranked list of documents, and you chose where to go. Every practice the industry invented — keywords, backlinks, technical hygiene — existed to win a slot on that menu.
Answer engines removed the menu. The model reads the sources, synthesizes them, and hands back a single response with a short row of citations underneath. There is no page two. Most of the time there is no page one either.
So the unit of visibility changed. It is no longer a position in a list. It is whether your brand is in the answer at all — and whether the model names you when it explains why.

SEO tools were built for a world of ten blue links. That world is over.
SEO isn’t dead — but it’s no longer enough. The work that earns a rank and the work that earns a citation have quietly stopped being the same work.
The definition
Answer engine optimization, defined.
Where SEO optimizes a page to rank, AEO optimizes a brand to be retrieved and trusted.

Machine readability
Structure a page so a model can lift the answer out of it without guessing. Clean headings, real schema, and the response sitting directly under the question rather than four paragraphs below it.
Retrieval
Be present where the model actually pulls from, at the moment it pulls. Retrieval is not indexation: freshness and source authority both gate it, and both decay.
Trust
Say things a model can verify. Quotations, statistics, named sources and dates all make a claim safer for a model to repeat with your name attached to it.
It isn’t a rebrand of SEO. It’s a different objective.
The evidence
What the research says actually moves it.
The first controlled work on this is public. A Princeton-led study presented at KDD 2024 tested content changes across generative engines and measured which ones changed how often a source got surfaced in the answer.

Four things that follow from it
Write answer capsules
Two or three sentences that answer the question completely, placed immediately under it. Models lift the capsule. Humans skim it. Everything else on the page is context for both.
Mark up what the answer is
FAQ and article JSON-LD tell a parser which text is the question and which is the answer, so the model is not inferring structure from your CSS.
Keep it fresh
Answer engines weight recency, and a page that has not moved in three years reads as a page that may no longer be true. Dates, updates and changelogs are retrieval signals.
Work the sources you don’t own
Independent analyses of AI citations put roughly 85% of brand mentions on third-party domains — comparison posts, forums, roundups, trade press. Your own site is necessary. It is not sufficient.

The AEO Readiness Check crawls a domain, grades it A+ to F across five subscores, and names the specific things it is missing. It is free.
